T’s Eats Under 100: Marakesh Restaurant

Morocco has always been in the Top 3 of my dream destinations. I feel like there is so much to see, feel and learn in a country that is so colourful, with its interesting culture and hospitable people.

My friend has a friend who has a friend (true story!) who is Moroccan and knows very well how local flavours taste. He recommended a place in Dubai where the food is as good as his mother’s cooking.

Marakesh Restaurant is a bit of a walk from Abu Hail Metro Station so you might need a map if you are not familiar with this part of the city.

The place’s interior is nothing fancy – basic tables & chairs with blue-tiled walls. The menu has pictures and is on the table (like a table cover) so expect to feel your appetite build up as soon as you find your seat.

Moroccan cuisine is typically a mix of Mediterranean, Arabic, Andalusian and Berber cuisine. Tajine, or literally “shallow earthen pot”, is a traditional concept of cooking named after the cookware in which it is cooked. Moroccan tajine dishes are slow-cooked which allows all the flavours come together.

This dish is called Tajine Meat with Prunes (AED 35). The lamb meat is so tender and moist! This the best lamb dish I have had so far. The prunes give it a sweet taste and I was pleasantly surprised.

This is called Couscous Vegetable and Meat (AED 40) with big chunks of vegetables and tender lamb meat (again), cooked in tajine making it so soft and flavourful.

These were served in huge portions and each dish is good for 2-3 people. Our food came with freshly baked bread, harissa (crushed dried chillies) and pickled olives. It was a perfect balance of sweet, savoury, herby and tangy.

There is nothing more satisfying than authentic Moroccan Tea (AED 20) after a heavy meal. They used fresh herbs for the tea which I really liked.

I have yet to visit the country but in the meantime, I will enjoy my tajine dishes in Dubai.

TOTAL BILL: AED 95 (good for 3 people)

If you know of any other nice Moroccan restaurants here in Dubai that serve the same quality of food for the same price, do let us know in the comments and we’ll be more than happy to try them out.

Hope to hear from you soon!
